If you find a dead bird with a band or are able to read the band number on a live bird, you are encouraged to report it to the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme. They can tell you when and where the bird was originally caught and how far it has moved from that spot. Information from recoveries and sightings of banded birds is extremely valuable to banders and helps us to better understand their biology and aids the conservation efforts for various species.
Information required from you, if possible:
- The unique number on the band (required)
- Where and when you found the bird
- What you think happened to the bird (cause of death or recapture)
- Where the bird and the band are now
If you have any of this information you can report the band on the ABBBS website here, or you can report it via email or phone using these contact details (scroll to the bottom of the page).
